Shin splints are a very common occurrence, particularly among athletes. They present in the form of pain along the shin, which is the front of the lower leg between the knee and the ankle. Shin splints can be a frustrating ailment because while they do not typically produce excruciating pain, they do produce chronic pain that is enough to affect a person’s quality of life. Typically, the best treatment for shin splints is rest and ice. Some medications can be used to help control pain. However, these do not necessarily help with the healing process. Therefore, avoiding shin splints is always the best course of action. Below are some of the common causes of shin splints.


Having Flat Feet

Having flat feet is a major cause of shin splints. Some people are born with very little to no arch in their feet. In addition to causing chronic foot pain, this can also lead to shin splints over time. This is because having flat feet puts additional stress on various muscles in your calf. Where there is not always a permanent fix for flat feet, using orthotics or shoe inserts can help your feet to remain arched, thus lessening the chance of you developing shin splints. In addition, people with flat feet should be extra careful when wearing heeled shoes as they are even more likely to develop pain.

Repetitive Stress

            Repetitive stress is one of the most common causes of shin splints. This can occur due to a wide variety of activities from sports that require a lot of jumping, to running too far without training. Repetitive stress to the heel and foot puts an unusual amount of stress on the tibia which can then lead to shin splints. Making sure you are landing properly when running and jumping, and increasing your activity level slowly can help to avoid shin splints in the future.


Poor Flexibility

            Poor flexibility is another cause of shin splints. For this reason, if you are an active person, it is important to stretch out daily. Maintaining flexible muscles both in your feet and in your legs can help to avoid shin splints when you are working out or undergoing intense activity. Doing stretches that isolate various parts of your body such as your toes, then feet, then calves, then upper legs can help to ensure all parts of your body are fully stretched before and after exercise.


Using Inappropriate Shoes

            Wearing appropriate footwear is always important in any ailment relating to the feet. Many people do not think about what kind of footwear they are wearing. Women choose to wear heels without thinking about the damage they can do to their feet. People wear tennis shoes when they are hiking on uneven surfaces. People with flat feet forego orthotics because it seems like an extra step. However, all these small steps make a major difference when dealing with foot problems. In fact, wearing incorrect footwear can make a person more prone to shin splints than if they were wearing proper footwear.
