Top Causes Of Ingrown Toenails

Top Causes Of Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are painful and are experienced by most people at some point in their lives.  They occur when the nail grows into the surrounding skin instead of outward, which leads to the nail folding.  There are a variety of different treatments for ingrown toenails.  However, the best option, if possible, is to prevent them from happening in the first place.  Understanding some of the most common causes of ingrown toenails can help you in preventing them in the future.

  1. Improper Trimming

Improper trimming is one of the most common causes of ingrown toenails.  This can be caused when a person cuts their nail too short, or when the sides of the nail are tapered too much.  This is particularly true on your big toenail because there is extra pressure put on the toe from walking and wearing shoes.

  1. Poorly Fitting Shoes

Poorly fitting shoes are another common cause of ingrown toenails.  Shoes that are too tight can put too much pressure on the toenail, causing the toenail to grow into the skin.  In addition, shoes, particularly running shoes that have the wrong shape, can also cause ingrown toenails due to the pressure put on the foot by running.  Avoiding shoes that come to a point such as women’s pumps, or some men’s dress shoes can also help in avoiding an ingrown toenail.

  1. Trauma

Trauma is a major cause of ingrown toenails.  Whether the trauma is caused by running, or something falling on your toe, traumas that cause the nail to break or fall off make the person particularly prone to ingrown toenails.  The best way to remedy this is by making a visit to your podiatrist and seeing if there is anything they can do to help the nail heal properly.

  1. Infection

Our feet spend a lot of time in hot, moist, sweaty shoes.  As a result, they are the perfect breeding ground for bacterial or fungal infections.  Many people will experience some type of toenail infection at some point in their lives.  While they often can be cleared up quickly, left untreated, they can end up causing ingrown toenails.  If you feel you may have an infection in your toenail, get to your doctor immediately.  The earlier the infection is treated, the less likely it is you will develop an ingrown toenail.

Ingrown toenails are very common amongst all people.  While they are typically not dangerous, they can cause a significant amount of pain and discomfort for people that can ultimately affect a person’s quality of life.  While there are treatments for ingrown toenails such as toenail removal or lifting up the edges of the toenail, these treatments can be painful for a period of time and do not always offer immediate relief.  Therefore, the best way to deal with an ingrown toenail is not to get one in the first place.  In the future, keep in mind the common causes of ingrown toenails, and you may be able to avoid getting one in the future.
